Summer Self-Care: Embracing Yin Energy with Qi-Gong and Restorative Yoga
As the warmth of summer envelops us, it's the perfect time to turn inward and nurture our well-being with practices that balance the body's energies and promote deep relaxation. At Yoga Kula Victoria Quarter in Leeds City Centre, we invite you to join us on a blissful journey of self-care, introspection, and rejuvenation with our special event on the 21st July, 2:45 pm - 4 pm: "Restorative Yoga + Qi-Gong for Self-Care."
This unique workshop is designed to harmonise the body, mind, and spirit through the ancient art of Qi-Gong and the deeply nourishing practice of restorative yoga. Whether you are new to these practices or a seasoned practitioner, this event offers a gentle invitation to slow down, recharge, and reconnect with yourself.
The Essence of Qi-Gong
Qi-Gong, an ancient Chinese practice, combines gentle movement, mindful breathing, and meditation to cultivate the flow of vital energy (Qi) throughout the body. The goal is to harmonise the body, mind, and spirit, promoting physical health, mental clarity, and emotional well-being. Through slow, deliberate movements and focused intention, Qi-Gong helps to enhance energy levels, reduce stress, and improve overall balance and flexibility.
Our workshop opens with an open-level Qi-Gong class led by Tash, who is experienced in teaching beginners and welcomes participants from all levels of yoga. The gentle movements in this class are designed to calm, ground, and ease anxiety. According to Chinese medicine, anxiety and worry arise when the flow of Qi through our organs and meridians becomes stuck or stagnant. In this class, we’ll practice techniques to support our Qi to flow in more natural, balanced ways, gradually alleviating tendencies towards restlessness, worry, and fear.
Qi-Gong, with its focus on the smooth flow of energy, is particularly beneficial during the summer when the intense heat can cause our bodies and minds to become overactive and restless. The slow movements, combined with mindful breathing, create a cooling and calming effect, helping us to stay balanced amidst the summer heat. This practice not only enhances physical flexibility and strength but also cultivates mental clarity and emotional stability, making it an ideal addition to your summer self-care routine.
Creating a Rest Nest: The Power of Restorative Yoga
Following the Qi-Gong session, we will transition into a restorative yoga practice, setting up our ‘rest nests’ with props to create a comfortable and supportive environment. Restorative yoga postures are designed to release tension, promote relaxation, and stimulate the body's natural healing processes. The intention of restorative yoga is to get the body so comfortable that it cannot resist relaxation, allowing you to soak up all the positive energy cultivated during the Qi-Gong practice.
Restorative yoga is a practice of deep rest and rejuvenation. By holding gentle poses for extended periods, supported by props, you give your body and mind the opportunity to relax completely. This practice is particularly effective for relieving stress and anxiety, enhancing energy levels, and promoting a sense of ease and harmony between mind and body.
In restorative yoga, the focus is on allowing the body to surrender and the mind to quieten. This is achieved through the use of props such as bolsters, blankets, and blocks, which support the body in passive poses. Each posture is held for several minutes, providing ample time for the muscles to release tension and the mind to enter a state of deep relaxation. This practice is especially beneficial during the summer when high energy and activity levels can lead to burnout. By incorporating restorative yoga into your self-care routine, you create a sanctuary of calm and tranquillity, helping to balance the yang energy of summer with the soothing yin energy of rest.
Embracing Yin Energy in Summer
In this workshop, we also explore the ancient Chinese concept of "yin" and how we can balance it through cooling practices. Yin represents the cooler, calmer, and more introspective aspects of our being, while its counterpart "yang" represents the warmer, more active, and more outgoing aspects. Summer, with its increased heat and activity, can sometimes lead to an imbalance where yang energy overwhelms yin energy. By embracing yin practices, we create a safe and supportive space to rest, recharge, and indulge in self-care.
Yin energy is all about slowing down and turning inward, which can be challenging during the vibrant and active summer months. However, by intentionally incorporating yin practices into your routine, you can create a balanced state that supports overall well-being. Cooling breath work, gentle stretches, and meditative movements all contribute to nurturing the yin aspect of your being, helping you to stay cool, calm, and collected even during the warmer days.
The Healing Power of Sound
To enhance the experience of deep relaxation this summer, we are delighted to release a Gong Bath Relaxation, sound healing session with Boshka. Join Boshka on Sunday 28th July, 3 pm - 4:15pm, for a journey through frequencies and immerse yourself in the healing vibrations of gongs, ocean drums, crystal bowls, and chimes. Sound healing is a powerful practice that can bring about profound relaxation and balance. Attending regular sound healing sessions can be life-changing, not only in allowing us to de-stress but also in increasing our productivity and resilience in coping with the challenges of modern life.
Some benefits of sound baths include:
Deep relaxation
Improved memory
Balancing the immune system
Harmonising body and mind
Alleviating depression and mood disorders
Relief from chronic pain and inflammation
A sense of peace and bliss
Activation of delta and theta brain waves
Sound healing works by using specific frequencies and vibrations to bring the body and mind into a state of harmony and balance. The sounds produced by instruments like gongs and crystal bowls can penetrate deeply into the body, releasing tension and promoting a sense of peace and well-being. During the sound healing session, you will be invited to lie down and simply listen, allowing the healing sounds to wash over you. This practice is particularly effective for releasing stress, improving sleep, and enhancing overall vitality.
