Whether you are a seasoned yogi or new to the practice, our classes are designed to support you throughout your pregnancy, preparing your body and mind for the incredible journey of motherhood.

What is Pregnancy Yoga?

Pregnancy Yoga is a gentle, mindful form of physical activity tailored specifically for expectant mothers. It combines traditional yoga poses with breathing exercises, meditation, and relaxation techniques, all adapted to support the changes your body undergoes during pregnancy. Recommended by medical professionals, Pregnancy Yoga is not only safe but also incredibly beneficial for both you and your baby.

Preparing Body and Mind

Pregnancy Yoga helps to prepare and support your body and mind for the many changes you can expect through pregnancy, labour, and beyond into motherhood. It helps you to develop inner confidence and strength, both physically and emotionally, as you prepare for the arrival of your little one. The practice of yoga during pregnancy is not about pushing your limits but about embracing the journey, listening to your body, and fostering a deep connection with your baby.

The Structure of Our Classes

Our Pregnancy Yoga classes at Yoga Kula Victoria Quarter are designed with the unique needs of pregnant women in mind. Here’s what you can expect:

Yoga Poses

We work with a variety of yoga poses that promote inner strength and balance while maintaining openness and flexibility. These poses are gentle and mindful, adapted to accommodate your growing belly and changing body. The physical practice helps to alleviate common pregnancy ailments such as back pain, swollen joints, and heartburn, ensuring that you remain comfortable and healthy throughout your pregnancy.

Breathing Techniques

Breathing practices in our classes help you to develop an awareness of the power of your breath and the profound connection between your body and your baby. Learning to control and deepen your breath can be incredibly beneficial during labour, helping to manage pain and anxiety, and promoting a sense of calm and focus.

Meditation and Relaxation

Meditation, visualisation, relaxation, and sound techniques are integral parts of our classes. These practices help to ground you, soothe away anxieties or fears, and promote a sense of inner peace. They provide you with the tools to relax deeply, which is essential for maintaining emotional balance during pregnancy and preparing for the challenges of motherhood.

Community and Support

One of the unique benefits of our Pregnancy Yoga classes is the opportunity to practice with other mums-to-be in an informal and supportive environment. This creates a safe space to share your thoughts, fears, and experiences, fostering a sense of community and mutual support. It’s a wonderful way to connect with others who are on the same journey, making new friends and building a support network that can be invaluable during pregnancy and beyond.

Our Pregnancy Yoga Teacher, Megan, tells her story:

Embracing the Unexpected: A Journey Through Pregnancy, Front Line Social Work and Yoga During the COVID-19 Pandemic

“Life has a way of surprising us when we least expect it, doesn’t it?! During the COVID-19 pandemic, when uncertainty was the only certainty, I discovered I was pregnant. The news was unexpected and both exciting and daunting, adding a new layer of complexity to an already challenging time. To add to the whirlwind, I was in the midst of a 300-hour yoga teacher training course at Yoga Kula Leeds, seeking to deepen my practice and knowledge. I was also working as a frontline Social Worker at the Hospitals within Leeds, trying to facilitate speedy but safe discharges to free up much-needed beds within the hospital. It was a rather chaotic and challenging time in my life!

Certainly not what I had envisioned my first experience of pregnancy would be like.

Amidst the chaos of my life, there was an innate invitation to slow down but whilst juggling the demands of Social Work and Teacher training coursework, focus on my pregnancy journey often fell by the wayside. As my pregnancy progressed, however, it brought a new set of challenges when I started experiencing pelvic girdle pain (PGP). This common pregnancy ailment can make simple movements painful, affecting everyday life and, notably, my yoga practice. Initially, I was frustrated. I was someone who’d always enjoyed a dynamic practice but lots of movement including deep stretches and balancing poses seemed to exacerbate the discomfort.

The pain serves as a reminder of my body's changing needs and that I needed to adapt my practice, but I didn’t know how.

So, as I didn’t have much on my plate at the time (you know, just a global pandemic, an unexpected pregnancy, and a 300-hour yoga course), I decided to dive deeper into adapting my practice to honour this journey. Naturally, I embarked on an additional 85 hours of pregnancy yoga teacher training with the wonderful Lara Heppell. Because, why not throw a little more yoga into the mix, right?

Our Pregnancy Yoga Teacher, Megan

Undertaking the pregnancy yoga course, despite the chaos in my life and an overflowing plate, was perhaps everything I needed at the time. Its focus on slowing down, turning inward, not striving, and surrendering provided the physical and emotional support essential for my journey to motherhood and for navigating life's pressures as a human being. I soon realised that this was an opportunity to adapt and grow in ways I hadn’t anticipated. My journey through pregnancy yoga became about more than just physical postures; it became a pathway to resilience and a deep connection to myself and my unborn baby.

I embraced a slower, more mindful approach to daily life.

I had to modify my yoga practice to accommodate my body’s new limitations. Gentle, mindful movements replaced my usual dynamic flow. I focused on poses that alleviated the discomfort of pelvic girdle pain and each time I practised was a lesson in listening to my body, practising from a place of deep compassion and finding acceptance with discomfort. Breathing practices also became a vital part of my routine. Each inhale and exhale was a conversation, a way to send love and calm to the little life growing inside me. These practices also instilled a sense of calm and peace within me, crucial amidst all the changes and challenges I was experiencing.

This journey was not just about managing pain or preparing for birth; it was about cultivating resilience. Each modification, each breath, and each pose was a step towards building confidence in my body’s ability to birth my baby. The experience taught me to trust in the natural process of pregnancy and birth, to find strength in vulnerability, and to embrace the unexpected with grace.

Looking back now, I realise that despite the challenges, my journey through the COVID-19 Pandemic and simultaneous pursuit of a 300-hour pregnancy yoga have revealed a deep resilience within me. I appreciate that life isn't always easy or smooth but I trust and know that everything is temporary. This experience has forever changed my approach to yoga and life completely, teaching me to embrace the unexpected, and the understanding that I am capable of navigating any of life’s challenges with grace and strength.

To all the expectant mothers navigating this unique journey, trust and tell yourself how capable and strong you are.

The path to motherhood is as much about the inner journey as it is about the physical one. Yoga can be your guide, helping you build the strength, resilience, and confidence needed to welcome your baby into the world. But I wholeheartedly believe the practices will serve you long after as you navigate nurturing your child throughout their lives.”
